ABB High Current Laboratory

O&S provided engineering services for the design and construction of a new research lab facility to house equipment relocated from a Plainville, CT, property. Engineering services included Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing design. Structural Engineering included design of augured and cast-in-place concrete piles to support a 155,000-pound generator, design of shallow spread footings to support the building structure, and design of the steel framed and masonry shear wall building structure. The design was closely coordinated with the existing facility as the relocated equipment was to be installed in exact relationship to each other as it was installed in Plainville.

The design process consisted of weekly design team meetings with GLSD as well as weekly meetings with the ownership representatives involved. The design was constantly reviewed and compared against the existing facility to ensure the new facility would accurately house the relocated equipment. The design progressed in phases starting with schematic design and progressing through construction documents.
