Drexel University Academy of Natural Sciences
Philadelphia, PA
We were hired by Drexel University as O&S is a preferred vendor with the University. The Academy of Natural Sciences is located on the corner of 19th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia, PA. It was originally constructed in 1812 and has maintained its status as the Academy of Natural Sciences since its original construction. There have been various renovations and additions to the building over the past 200 years. The building is clad in brick masonry and is highlighted with ornate terra cotta above a granite band. The terra cotta has unique textures and profiles throughout all elevations with a large focus at the 19th and Race Street entrances. The lightwell elevations mostly consist of brick masonry with a localized terra cotta cornice with dentils and brownstone banding and sills.
O&S performed a detailed assessment of the historic façade via industrial rope access and provided the University with a prioritized budget to assist in programming the repairs of the building. The design of the first program has been completed and bid and is awaiting the start of construction.
